Rehabilitation of the Almirante Reis axis

Transforming the Avenue with People and for People

Lisbon City Council is presenting the Almirante Reis Axis Integrated Public Space Redevelopment Project, which includes not only the avenue, but also Rua da Palma and part of the surrounding area.

Strategy

The proposal for the Almirante Reis axis is the result of the articulation between the 1st phase of the Public Participation Process, carried out between May and June 2023, and the Technical Report carried out by the Lisbon City Council services in 2023.

The proposal has three fundamental objectives: to integrate the various modes of road transport, to guarantee safety and comfort for walking and cycling, and to create a continuous green structure from the future Martim Moniz garden to Praça Francisco de Sá Carneiro.

A new profile with three lanes between Martim Moniz and Alameda D. Afonso Henriques and four lanes from Alameda D. Afonso Henriques to Praça Francisco de Sá Carneiro.

A new axis with wider, tree-covered sidewalks, comfortable and obstacle-free pedestrian corridors, seating areas with benches, orderly and aligned esplanade areas, a continuous and segregated cycle path, from Martim Moniz to Praça Francisco de Sá Carneiro.

It envisages:

A new axis with more security by reinforcing the lighting of the public space with autonomous systems for the road axes and the pedestrian areas and cycle lane.

An urban space adapted to the challenges of the climate: reducing the heat island, increasing the area of rainfall infiltration to reduce the occurrence of floods and increasing biodiversity: more living soil, more trees and a system of native shrubs.

A new green corridor between Baixa Pombalina and the Vale da Montanha Urban Park to the north of Praça Francisco de Sá Carneiro.

A functional, sustainable and qualified public space for the new Almirante Reis axis.
