City marks one year since Portugal's largest ever youth gathering

Lisbon celebrated the first anniversary of World Youth Day (WYD) on August 1. The event marked Pope Francis' visit to Portugal and was attended by one and a half million young pilgrims and volunteers.

From August 1 to 6, 2023, Lisbon welcomed pilgrims and volunteers from all over the world, who transformed the city into a scene of global celebration.

The Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, highlighted the positive impact of the event, which generated around ten thousand jobs and almost 300 million euros, reflecting the importance of WYD for the local economy and the city's development.

World Youth Day was one of the biggest events ever held in Portugal, and left a lasting impression on the capital.

Pope Francis recently expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in WYD, underlining the commitment of each person who made Lisbon the beating heart of the world's youth.
