Largo das Belas-Artes will be the new centrality of Chiado
The proposal aims to requalify Largo da Academia Nacional de Belas-Artes, so that it becomes an "effective extension of the country's largest arts and design school", the only college still located in the historic center of the city, "but also the center of public life in Chiado".
The project, part of the municipal program "Há vida no meu bairro" (There's life in my neighbourhood), was presented by the Councillor for Urbanism, Joana Almeida, and aims to create a space for everyone, accessible, capable of welcoming inhabitants and users, increasing the pedestrian area, regulating traffic and parking, including bicycles, increasing the permeable area, tree planting and space for sitting and lounging, preserving the tranquillity of the place and respecting its history, as well as renovating the street furniture and lighting.
In 2018, "Largo das Belas-Artes" was one of the winners of the Participatory Budget, with 810 votes.
