Lisbon City Council welcomes international students and researchers

Lisbon City Hall today welcomed around 300 students and researchers from 62 countries who have chosen to live in Lisbon for the next few months. The initiative, part of CML's Study & Research in Lisbon project, aims to attract and retain talent to the city.

At the reception in the Town Hall, the president of the municipality, Carlos Moedas, passed on the baton as one of the first Portuguese to do Erasmus in 1993.

"Openness, diversity, getting to know other worlds is so important in our lives and they are going to have this experience in our city." Lisbon, he said, wants to be "that safe haven, where everyone has the right to do whatever they want. There is only one rule: tolerance, moderation, mutual respect".

The "Study in Lisbon" project "aims to unite as many entities as possible so that, through joint initiatives, they can disseminate and promote the city's scientific and academic potential and institutions internationally, thus contributing to attracting national and foreign talent, students and researchers to Lisbon".

According to data from 2022, the number of international students in Lisbon is estimated at 23,000.
