Lisbon marks four years since the invasion of Ukraine
The initiative included a minute's silence for the victims of the war, traditional Ukrainian music, a rendition of the Ukrainian national anthem and moments when flags were raised and the "Slava Ukrayine" appeal was chanted.
The Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, spoke at the ceremony, alongside the Ukrainian ambassador to Portugal, Maryna Mykhailenko, and members of the municipal executive and the Municipal Assembly.
In his speech, Carlos Moedas said: "Lisbon has been here with you from the very first moment". And he stressed that, four years after the start of the conflict, the city continues to support the Ukrainian people: "What we have seen in these four years is the invasion of Europe by Russia," he said, adding that Ukraine "is fighting for democracy and freedom in Europe".
The mayor considered that "it's difficult to have words on this day", but stressed the importance of "paying homage to your country, paying homage to your people and paying homage to our friendship, Lisbon's friendship with Ukraine". Addressing the Ukrainian community, the mayor said: "Your people are shedding your blood for our children, for our Europe", adding that "we can never forget what your people are doing for the people of Europe".
Carlos Moedas also recalled episodes of solidarity between Lisbon and Kiev, namely the sending of humanitarian aid from the city of Lisbon and the collaboration in rebuilding the cross of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev. "Today, in Kiev, when you look at the 11th century cathedral and you look up, that cross up there has a little bit of Lisbon in it," he said.
The mayor concluded by reiterating the connection between the two cities: "In Lisbon, you have your best friends. Lisbon is also Ukraine. Lisbon is Kiev. Lisbon is Ukraine and always will be."
In her speech, Ambassador Maryna Mykhailenko thanked people for their support over the last four years and highlighted the importance of international solidarity for Ukraine.
The ceremony ended with a rendition of the Ukrainian anthem and further expressions of support for the Ukrainian people, reaffirming Lisbon's "commitment to the values of freedom, democracy and peace".
