"Memories of Lisbon" project recognized as good European practice
The "innovative nature and alignment with the triple transformation of green, digital and social" are highlights of the program, which is dedicated to collecting, preserving and disseminating intangible cultural heritage and local history from the 20th century, through community workshops and oral history interviews.
The initiative gathers testimonies from residents on topics such as Parque Mayer, fado, popular festivals and neighborhood life, resulting in traveling exhibitions and documentaries.
Lisbon is also an associate partner of the European Heritage Hub, operated in Portugal by the National Culture Centre, Europa Nostra's representative, and co-financed by the European Union. The installation of the hub in the city, formalized on April 18, 2024, International Day of Monuments and Sites, reinforces Lisbon's role in international cooperation for the enhancement and preservation of cultural heritage.
For the Councillor for Culture, Diogo Moura, the recognition of the project "is a source of great pride for Lisbon. The distinction demonstrates how the city's cultural heritage can be enhanced through initiatives that combine memory, innovation and community participation."
Strengthening Lisbon's collective memory, he added, "is also about building a city that is more aware of its past and better prepared for the challenges of the future".
