"Portugal Pop" celebrates 50 years of fashion at MUDE
Until October, we will explore the last 50 years of popular culture, history and collective memory, projected into contemporary times through fashion design and the creativity of designers from different generations. The exhibition invites the public to explore dialogues that cross various references: from music to spectacle, from traditional crafts to sustainability and to reflect on the cultural, economic and social value of Portuguese fashion.
"The essence of all this is design. And design is our ability to add value," said Carlos Moedas, president of Lisbon City Council, at the opening of the exhibition.
Organized around three themes: collective memory and national identity, personal territories: intersubjectivity in the first person and ecological: anthropology of places, materials and knowledge, the exhibition promotes a dialogue between different times, aesthetics and cultural influences.
"It's an exhibition that has a lot to do with Lisbon: it has something of a dialectic, it has something of history and essence," added Carlos Moedas, stressing that "the dialectic between ancient and modern, between traditional and innovation, between urban and rural, even between what is monochromatic and what is polychromatic. And Lisbon is just that, a city that wants to undo these differences and wants everyone to have their place, because it is a polychromatic city."
One of the highlights of "Portugal Pop" is the tribute to the role of Portuguese artists in the construction of its images, taking on the stamp of "being Portuguese". This influence is highlighted through iconic pieces associated with eight figures from Portuguese pop culture: Amália Rodrigues, António Variações, Heróis do Mar, Teresa Salgueiro/Madredeus, Mísia, Sónia Tavares/The Gift, Joana Vasconcelos and Conan Osiris. Complementing the visual narrative, a sound installation by Tiago Pereira evokes everyday experiences, traditional practices and songs recorded throughout the country, enriching the immersive experience of the exhibition.
After a first presentation in 2022, as part of "MUDE Fora de Portas", at Casa do Design, in Matosinhos, the exhibition now comes to Lisbon in a co-production between MUDE and Esad-idea, Investigação em Design e Arte. The "Portugal Pop" exhibition is open to the public until October 12.
