The inauguration of Avenida da Liberdade in the 19th century allowed the city to grow to the north, with the construction of new neighborhoods from the Marquês de Pombal traffic circle to Campo Pequeno.
The Avenidas Novas stand out at the turn of the 20th century for the quality of their urban plan, inspired by Parisian boulevards.
