Innovation program against food waste in Lisbon

Lisbon City Council is looking for creative minds to develop solutions against food waste, focused on Colina do Castelo and its business fabric (with a strong presence of tourist restaurants, coffees and local tourism).

Recipients: bachelor's and master's degree students from courses related to these areas of activity, such as marketing and communication, materials engineering, nutrition, agronomy, tourism, design, biotechnology, among others.
The program offers 2 months to work on real challenges in the city, with access to mentoring and contact with the sustainability ecosystem in the city (companies in the food sector, NGOs, the City Council...). The aim is to explore innovative ideas and get them into prototype form, to be presented to stakeholders in the city.

Discover your potential: develop skills with specialized mentors and training that will help you get any project off the ground;

Create a network of positive impact: join a community passionate about innovation and sustainability;

Access prototyping tools: take advantage of the equipment and expertise at FabLab and BioLab;

Education and awareness-raising in the fight against waste: training stakeholders (restaurants, end consumers, etc.) to reduce waste and promote circularity, with solutions adapted to the context.

Reusing food waste: Developing products, biomaterials, biofuels and fertilizers from materials not consumed in the area, making the most of them economically; creating new opportunities in sectors such as composting or recycling.

Packaging: Creating products or materials with added value from non-recyclable packaging; creating innovative and sustainable packaging.

For 2.5 months, teams of students develop ideas and create the first prototypes with access to:

  • Training program
  • Mentors
  • FabLab/BioLab Lisboa - prototyping laboratory

The best solutions will be presented to the main institutional and business stakeholders involved in food waste management in the city (representatives of the Lisbon City Council, companies, among others).
