António Chainho says goodbye to the stage in Lisbon
The "Lisboa Saudade" show brought together fado singers Carminho and António Zambujo, Marta Pereira da Costa, the Naked Lunch and his regular musicians, Ciro Bertini, on bass and accordion, and Tiago Oliveira, on viola.
António Dâmaso Chainho, 86, recorded his first album in 1975. Throughout a career spanning six decades, he has played with some of the biggest names in national and world music, such as Carlos do Carmo, Camané, Alfredo Marceneiro, António Mourão, Frei Hermano da Câmara, Hermínia Silva and Maria Teresa de Noronha. In addition to fado, he has accompanied Teresa Salgueiro, José Afonso, José Cid, but also Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, José Carreras and Adriana Calcanhoto, among others.
On the occasion, Carlos Moedas paid tribute to the master António Chainho, from Alentejo, "but also from Lisbon" and "a man of the world". The Portuguese guitar, said the mayor of Lisbon, "would not be what it is without the master, because the master had the courage, like few others, to change the fate of the Portuguese guitar. He changed the destiny, he freed the Portuguese guitar".
In 2012, António Chainho was honored by the Lisbon City Council with the Municipal Gold Medal of Merit.
