"Bauhaus of the Seas Sails 2024 artist residencies announce winners

Rain Wu, Francisca Rocha Gonçalves, and the collective Fahrenheit 180, are the winners of the three art and sustainability residencies in the Tagus River bio-region. The projects "combine art with fields as diverse as science, gastronomy and design, under the motto of sustainability and the relationship with the local marine environment - the estuary, the river and the ocean"

The initiative, run by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's Modern Art Center, is in collaboration with the municipalities of Lisbon and Oeiras, as part of the European Bauhaus of the Seas Sails project.

The three winning projects will be developed over three months in the bio-region of the River Tagus, between Lisbon and Oeiras, and will be completed by the end of 2024.

About the projects

"Underwater Ecotones" is the project chosen for the Art & Science Residency - A Call to the Sea, which will take place in the municipality of Oeiras.

It is a project led by Francisca Rocha Gonçalves (PT), in collaboration with Akira Kira (PT), Johannes Goessling (DE) and Pedro Frade (PT), which aims to investigate underwater soundscapes, their noise and vibration, in direct relation to species in the Vasco da Gama Aquarium collection. The project also aims to rethink the museum space, expanding the potential and impact of what could become an aquarium-museum in the future. This approach envisages a museum that not only preserves and exhibits, but also interacts with and adapts to its ecological context, fostering a deeper connection between visitors and the environment.

"Lisbon Spice Rack" is the project selected for the Art and Gastronomy Residency - Eating Between Tides, which will take place in the municipality of Lisbon.
Led by Taiwanese artist Rain Wu in collaboration with Inês Neto dos Santos (PT) and Mariana Sanchez Salvador (PT), this project will investigate wild edible plants in the Sea of Straw. Through a process of co-creation with students from Marvila, the artists will develop a regenerative menu that will later be tested in Lisbon schools and at CAM's restaurant.

"À flor do azulejo, a cor do Tejo" is the project selected for the Art & Design Residency - Radical Waters-Concrete Matters, which will also take place in the municipality of Lisbon.
This project, developed by the Fahrenheit 180 collective - Swiss architect Jeremy Morris and Portuguese-Swiss designer Luca Carlisle, and based in Lisbon - proposes reusing oyster waste as a new substrate to reimagine the typical Portuguese tile. Using natural bonds derived from local seaweed, it aims to reduce energy consumption in the tile production process and elevate the role of oysters and seaweed in cleaning water and storing carbon.

Bauhaus of the Seas Sails is one of the six Lighthouse Demonstrators of the New European Bauhaus initiative, promoted since 2020 by the European Commission to accelerate the implementation of the green pact.
