"Bauhaus of the Seas Sails celebrates World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day, June 8, was celebrated in Lisbon with various activities in the riverside area, including the presentation of two pilot projects: "Bluemaker Space" and "Regenerative Menu" as part of the European project "Bauhaus of the Seas Sails".

In Marvila, the Parque Ribeirinho Oriente was the venue chosen for the presentation of these two projects, which are anchored in research centered on the Mar da Palha - Tagus Estuary, the starting point for the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails project in Lisbon.

To celebrate Lisbon's relationship with the river, workshops were held where participants learned how to create biomaterials using biodegradable raw materials such as alginate and reusing oyster shells, in an exploration of ecological alternatives to traditional plastics.

They also learned how to cook a stew with the Tagus river at the table and how to make slow, ephemeral and edible living photography from photosensitive supports that result from combining agar-agar with natural dyes.

Bauhaus of the Seas Sails is one of the first six Lighthouse Demonstrators of the New European Bauhaus initiative, promoted since 2020 by the European Commission to accelerate the implementation of the Green Deal. The European consortium includes municipalities, universities and cultural institutions from European cities: Rotterdam, Malmo, Venice, Genoa and Hamburg. The Portuguese participation is ensured by the municipalities of Lisbon and Oeiras, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Instituto Superior Técnico.
