Chamber defends end to night flights at Portela

At a public meeting today, the Lisbon City Council (CML) unanimously approved a motion in defense of reducing the number of flights per hour and ending night flights, rejecting any increase in airport capacity at Humberto Delgado airport.

The motion, signed by all the parties represented in the City Council and approved unanimously, affirms the "need to reduce the number of flights per hour", refusing to increase the capacity of Humberto Delgado airport, "given the very significant negative impacts on the city of Lisbon, which are already being felt by the population, namely in terms of public health, safety and the environment".

With this position, CML advocates the "definitive closure" of Humberto Delgado airport, "as soon as possible, and it should only remain in operation for the minimum time necessary", until the new airport is built at Alcochete Shooting Range. In other words, explains the proposal, "clearly, in less than 10 years".

Finally, the document advocates the "elimination of night flights".

At the end of the meeting, CML president Carlos Moedas stressed the consensus reached in defense of Lisbon residents, despite the disagreements with some points of the motion: "Even in these differences that you present here, it is above all important to tell Lisbon residents that we agree, that we don't want any more night flights."

"We agree that we want the new airport quickly, we want it to be built as soon as possible, because that's what will allow us to have zero movements per hour in Lisbon."

At the meeting, he added, "a joint signal was left, of the joint strength of Lisbon City Council, even with all the differences, but we are united in these conclusions and that is important for the future".
