Ecuadorian Navy school ship pays official visit to Lisbon
The ceremony, which took place in the Town Hall, followed the pattern of official visits by foreign training ships.
The Guayas, a three-masted brig, was built in 1974 at the Astilleros y Talleres "Celaya" shipyard in Bilbao, Spain. The ship was named after a chief of the Huancavilca tribe, originally from the mouth of the Guayas River, the largest river on the Pacific coast, which also gave its name to the first steamship built in South America.
Throughout its history, the Guayas has visited more than 60 countries and covered more than 340,000 nautical miles, carrying out cadet training missions and diplomatic representation for the Republic of Ecuador.
