Exhibition in Lisbon marks 80 years of the United Nations

As part of the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) and the 70th anniversary of Portugal's accession, Lisbon today hosted the international exhibition "Shared Lives, Shared Futures", with human stories from the UN Member States.

"Shared Lives, Shared Futures" brings together human stories from all 193 UN member states. Its aim is to "make visible the organization's impact on people's daily lives - often invisibly - through real-life testimonies about peace, human rights, sustainable development and humanitarian assistance".

"Lisbon is an open city, which has tolerance, respect for difference and the ability to work together in its DNA. It is therefore the right place to host and share the values of the United Nations," said Carlos Moedas, Mayor of Lisbon.

Representing the UN, the Under-Secretary-General for Global Communication, Melissa Fleming, recalled that "we can only solve the world's problems together. That's what this exhibition shows: how the work of the United Nations has a direct and indirect impact on people's lives".

The exhibition reinforces the idea that "multilateralism (cooperation between governments and peoples) is what keeps the world running, helping to tackle global challenges that no country can solve alone".

The exhibition, in Portuguese and English, is accessible at Praça do Município until April 12, 24 hours a day. In Lisbon, 25 of these stories can be seen, but many others can be consulted on the UN website.
