International Condom Day: Lisbon joins the initiative

Lisbon is marking International Condom Day on February 13 at Praça do Oriente, next to Gare do Oriente. The initiative includes rapid screenings for HIV and viral hepatitis, as well as actions to raise awareness of condom use as a preventative measure.

As part of the Lisboa Sem Sida Initiative, the municipality, in partnership with various organizations, has been offering condoms at the Lisbon Municipal Libraries and the Saldanha Citizen's Bureau. These actions are part of the motto "More Information, Less Stigma".

In 2024, the Directorate-General for Health's program of free distribution of preventive and informational materials ensured the delivery of more than six million male and female condoms.

The United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS recommends the widespread distribution of condoms, especially among young people, and advocates strategies to reduce stigma and promote their visibility in public spaces.
