Lisbon City Council supports refurbishment of PSP police stations
The investment planned for this phase, which could reach three million euros, covers the requalification of six police stations, mostly in municipal buildings: Bairro da Boavista; Bairro da Serafina; Bairro Padre Cruz; Belém; Campo de Ourique; Parque das Nações, with interventions in the rehabilitation of interiors, infrastructures, and roof repairs, among other "fundamental works".
"What we are accomplishing today is a structural investment in six critical points in the city," said the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, at this afternoon's ceremony in the Paços do Concelho, attended by Telmo Correia, Secretary of State for Internal Administration. These are police stations that "will no longer be dilapidated spaces, but dignified, functional and modern places".
The support that has now been formalized is part of the Lisbon municipality's security strategy, which calls for the reinforcement of the teams and means necessary "for a prompt and effective response" in the area of the security of people and goods, "in every street and in every neighbourhood".
The upgrading of the six police stations will create "better conditions for those who wear the uniform and a better service for those who live, work and visit our city", said Carlos Moedas. "We are giving dignity to those who defend us".
At a recent meeting of the Municipal Security Council, the mayor of Lisbon had called for an increase in policing in Lisbon: "We need at least 500 more public security police in Lisbon. We've lost more than a thousand in the last 10 years, so we need more PSP and I'm going to keep fighting for that."
