Lisbon mourns the death of Anita Guerreiro

Anita Guerreiro, eternalized by the hit "Cheira Bem, Cheira a Lisboa", died today at the age of 89. Lisbon sends its deepest condolences to her family and friends.


Anita Guerreiro, stage name Bebiana Guerreiro Cardinalli, was born in Lisbon on November 13, 1936, and began singing when she was just 16.

In February 1954, she made her debut in revue theater, beginning her professional career, having taken part in around 50 highly successful revues. She took part in television series and was godmother of several Lisbon marches.

In Africa, she was awarded the golden guitar, two acting prizes and first prize for fado in Luanda, at the Luanda Song Festival. In the United States, she was awarded two Oscars for popularity in Fall River in 1987 and 1988.

In 2001, she received the Silver Pelourinho from the city of Lisbon. In 2004, in her hometown, she was awarded the Municipal Gold Medal for Cultural Merit, a Gold Caravel and, that same year, the Keys to the City.

In 2014, she celebrated 60 years of her career with a show at São Luiz, where she was joined by friends and artists who came to pay tribute to her.
