Lisbon reaffirms its position as the best European destination for short stays
The award, presented yesterday in Sardinia, Italy, reinforces the consistent work carried out in enhancing the tourist offer and promoting an authentic and sustainable city, the result of cooperation between public and private entities. The focus on heritage requalification, cultural enrichment, gastronomy and wines has allowed Lisbon to establish itself as a destination of excellence for short stays and unique experiences.
"This is validation that we need to continue to invest firmly in the quality of the experience and the integrity of Lisbon's heritage," said Carlos Moedas, president of Lisbon City Council (CML). "We continue to work to make the destination synonymous with authenticity and commitment, where tourism and cultural investment is the best way to guarantee lasting competitiveness."
The distinction now awarded to Lisbon is also recognition of the work of the Lisbon Tourism Association, a CML partner, whose mission since 1997 has been to promote the city as a tourist destination of excellence.
Created in 1993, the World Travel Awards annually distinguish the excellence achieved by tourist destinations, hotels, airlines and other entities in the sector. These awards represent a seal of quality and a stamp of prestige for those who excel in providing the best that the tourism industry has to offer on a global level.
