Lisbon record: partnership with London attracts over 15,000 marathon runners

The 12th edition of the Lisbon Marathon saw a new record number of entries, "becoming one of the great marathons in Europe". Kenyans and Ethiopians dominated the race, organized in partnership with the London Marathon and with the support of Lisbon City Council.

In the men's race, Zablon Chumba, from Kenya (2:07:11 - a new personal best), Gadisa Shumie, from Ethiopia (2:07:25), and Limenith Yizengaw, from Ethiopia (2:08:57), were the first to cross the finish line in Lisbon's Terreiro do Paço.

Less than two and a half hours after the start, this year in Carcavelos, the top three finishers in the women's race reached the finish line: Abebech Bekele, from Ethiopia (2:29:00), Asmare Assefa, from Ethiopia (2:29:09), and Rael Kinyara, from Kenya (2:29:22).

André Costa, an amateur athlete from Casa do Benfica de Reguengos de Monsaraz, was the first Portuguese to reach the finish line, with a time of 2:27:09. In the women's race, Sara Urbano, also an amateur, was the first to reach Terreiro do Paço, with 2:49:58.

The partnership with London "is very important", said Carlos Móia, director of the Maratona Clube de Portugal, which organizes the race. "For the first time in the history of marathons in Portugal, we have registrations of around 15,000 people. Years ago we had around 7,000 registered," he said.

Tomorrow, Sunday, Lisbon will once again welcome thousands of athletes to run the 21 km of the 25th edition of the Half Marathon, starting at the Vasco da Gama Bridge.
