Lisbon's western zone hosts decentralized meeting

Residents of Ajuda and Belém met with the Lisbon City Council this afternoon. The decentralized meeting, at the Caselas Futebol Clube headquarters, made it possible to listen to and provide answers to residents' problems.

The network of cycle paths will grow in both parishes, said Gonçalo Reis, vice-president and councillor for Mobility. The 8 km Monsanto cycle path will be completed by the end of the first semester, he guaranteed. In March of this year, he added, the Lisbon City Council (CML) approved a program of "eight million euros of new cycle paths", which implies "8 km in the works as early as 2026, and an additional 23 km, much of it in the riverside area, for 2027". Later this year, "we're going to build the Pedrouços viaduct", to connect the Belém area to the riverside, he said.

Bairro de Caselas will receive the Zones 30 program, which has already been implemented in 15 places in the city. The municipality's commitment, Gonçalo Reis stressed, is to have 30 more neighbourhoods with this program, including Bairro de Caselas, which has already been identified by CML.

This morning, in a private meeting, the CML unanimously approved a set of works in the Caramão da Ajuda neighborhood, with an investment of €1,579,188.04. The intervention, in the streets Pedro Augusto de Franco, Clube Recreativo do Caramão and Raúl Proença, will take 365 days to complete and includes "a series of corrective measures":

  • structural rehabilitation of the slopes, retaining walls and sidewalks leading to the houses;
  • improving surface drainage conditions;
  • upgrading the public space, with a special focus on accessibility, road and pedestrian safety and landscape enhancement;
  • reorganizing parking and waste disposal areas.

In response to the problems identified at E.B. Caselas by the president of the parents' association, the councillor for municipal buildings, Vasco Moreira Rato, gave assurances of a series of interventions "scheduled for the near future": new window frames for the gymnasium, replacement of broken glass, an intervention on the roof because of the water slope and also a repair of some areas of the façade above the windows. Already completed, he said, are the repairs to the bathrooms and the replacement of the hinges on the windows that were under repair.

The Lisbon - Oeiras Rapid Transport(metrobus) project is going to be a reality, said Gonçalo Reis, considering the project to be "structural and large-scale". From 2028, access to the Monsanto Forest Park will be reinforced, with Benfica becoming a high-capacity public transport entrance to the city and a privileged link to the Ajuda University Campus. The project, presented last year, will have a 21 km dedicated canal route and a fleet of 16 electric buses.

The meeting ended with speeches from the chairmen of the Ajuda and Belém parish councils, Jorge Marques and João Carvalhosa, respectively, and from councillors without portfolio from all the political forces on the executive.
