Municipality approves renewal of Urban Hygiene and Security fleet

With the investment approved today, Lisbon City Council is moving ahead with the renovation of a "very old" vehicle fleet. The acquisition of 10 26-ton trucks and 37 light vehicles will strengthen the operational capacity of the Urban Hygiene service and the Municipal Police, which should soon be reinforced with the integration of 100 new agents.

The proposals approved today at the Lisbon City Council meeting refer to "a high rate of inoperability, increased maintenance and repair costs" of heavy urban waste removal vehicles, in a fleet in which "61 vehicles are more than 14 years old".

The €2,943,390 investment aims to respond to the "progressive increase in daily waste production" in Lisbon, associated with the "increase in hotel and tourist offers", considers the proposal, which implies an increase in daily removal circuits and the "need to guarantee sufficient operational capacity" to ensure a collection service "without disruptions".

The 10 heavy-duty vehicles, weighing 26 tons and with a waste collection box of more than 15m3, "make it possible to accommodate different waste streams, including unsorted and organic waste, in the same type of equipment".

The need for renovation was also identified in the Lisbon Municipal Police, where the "advanced state of degradation of the current fleet of vehicles (...) compromises the normal execution of its functions," the proposal reads.

The measure is also intended to accommodate the planned "reinforcement of the Lisbon Municipal Police with the integration of 100 new officers". In order to cover an area of approximately 100 km2 and to "guarantee effective and efficient action in the territory", the MP considers that, whenever possible, the "ratio of one vehicle per officer on duty" should be adopted.
