Portuguese Republic celebrated 115 years

Lisbon hosted the ceremonies marking the 115th anniversary of the Implantation of the Republic in Portugal. On the morning of October 5, 1910, José Relvas proclaimed the Republic from the balcony of the Paços do Concelho.

This year, with no speeches due to the campaign for the local elections, the October 5th ceremonies were limited to the raising of the flag and the national anthem on the balcony of the Salão Nobre do Paços do Concelho.

Limited to institutional guests and the municipal executive, the date was commemorated with the presence of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, the presidents of the Assembly of the Republic and Lisbon City Council, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco and Carlos Moedas, and Rosário Farmhouse, president of the Municipal Assembly.

The first truly Republican municipality

In 1908, there was a crucial moment that paved the way for the "victory of the Republic". That year, there was a huge Republican mobilization for the municipal elections of the time, tells us Paulo Almeida Fernandes, from the CML.

For the Republicans, he adds, the establishment of the Republic "could only be achieved with the support of the power of the municipalities". In November 1908, Lisbon "became the first truly Republican municipality", which led to October 5, 1910.
