St. Patrick's Day parade for the first time in Portugal

Today Lisbon was the scene of an unprecedented celebration in our country. From Avenida da Liberdade to Terreiro do Paço, the streets were dressed in green in honor of St. Patrick's Day, the patron saint of Ireland.

More than 200 musicians in 10 bagpipe bands, accompanied by thousands of people, enlivened the afternoon in Lisbon with traditional Irish music.

The parade - with the support of the Lisbon City Council - pays homage to Saint Patrick and is celebrated on March 17 by millions of people all over the world, making it one of the most celebrated Irish holidays.

A missionary, Saint Patrick was born in Roman Britain and died on March 17, 461. Traditionally marked with festivals and religious services, the date became a secular celebration of Irish culture when he arrived in the United States alongside Irish immigrants.
