Women's participation is essential in Lisbon

Lisbon marks International Women's Day by highlighting the presence and contribution of women in the city and in the municipality. They represent more than half of the human resources and lead many of the technical teams. Their role is essential in the running of the city council and in the life of the city.

Between 2021 and 2025, three courses and eight training and awareness-raising actions were held on gender equality and the promotion of opportunities, involving 105 participants.

These initiatives sought to strengthen knowledge and reflection on equality between women and men in the workplace and in society.

The latest data also shows the weight of women in the municipality. In January 2026, of the 10,473 employees of Lisbon City Council, 5,523 are women. Among senior technicians, women are also in the majority: 1,729 women and 790 men.

Over the last few years, the municipality has also promoted various awareness-raising actions related to health, well-being and quality of life, topics that have a particular impact on the lives of women and families. These initiatives include sessions on breast cancer prevention, women's health, menopause, self-care and mental health.

In 2024, there was a talk on women's health and a workshop on moral and sexual harassment in the workplace. In 2025, there were sessions on topics such as the menopause, domestic violence, mindfulness and self-care, leadership and mental health in teams and emotional balance in family contexts.

Disease prevention and the promotion of healthy habits has also been a regular area of intervention. In recent years there have been initiatives on sleep, healthy eating, smoking prevention, skin care and mental health literacy, as well as sessions dedicated to anxiety, support for informal caregivers and psychological well-being.

On International Women's Day, Lisbon City Council (CML) is also making a symbolic gesture to the municipality's female employees, by giving flowers to all the women who work in the municipal services and the 138 schools in the municipal network.

The initiatives reflect an ongoing commitment to equality and well-being. "Promoting gender equality and creating the conditions for all women to fully develop their potential is a permanent priority for CML."
