Considered one of the largest private mausoleums in Europe

Completed in 1849, it was designed by architect-scenographer José Cinatti and Aquiles Rambois to bury the deceased members of the Palmela family. A unique work of funerary architecture in Portugal, with a capacity for 200 bodies, its interior contains sculptures of enormous artistic value by Canova, Calmels and Teixeira Lopes.

This visit tells the story of the construction of the tomb and the family.

The contribution of cemeteries to the development of criminology

A course on criminology, forensic science and forensic medicine.

Reference is made to important Portuguese figures in this field during the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century, such as Rodolfo Xavier da Silva and Judge Francisco Maria da Veiga. Highlights include some of the crimes and investigations that had the greatest impact on Portuguese society at the time, such as press censorship in the Mãe D'Água Stairs Crime or the innovative methodology used to identify the victim of the Serra de Monsanto Crime. A tribute to Maria Alves (1897-1926) on the 100th anniversary of her death.
