Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro: Life and Work

A long-term exhibition that revisits the multifaceted career of this key figure in Portuguese culture.

This long-term exhibition offers a contemporary and up-to-date view of the life and work of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, a plural artist and outstanding personality of the Portuguese 19th century.

Caricaturist, illustrator, ceramist, costume designer, decorator, businessman and author of countless graphic works, Bordalo Pinheiro was, in the words of his friend César Machado, "an artist. In everything and of everything artist". Born in Lisbon, where he lived for most of his life, he worked and collaborated with prominent writers, journalists, actors, playwrights and directors, maintaining a deep relationship with theater and the visual arts.

Enterprising, dynamic and enthusiastic, he traveled to important European cities and lived for four years in Rio de Janeiro, where he directed three of the eight humorous newspapers he founded during his career. A liberal, anti-monarchist and anti-clerical, he was socially committed to the causes of his time, fighting for the Republic and defending progress, while also valuing traditions and historical heritage.

The exhibition, organized over seven rooms, reveals Bordalo Pinheiro's complex and multifaceted legacy in the various areas in which he worked, inviting the public to understand the relevance of his thinking and the lasting impact of his work on contemporary society.
