Bicycle Tour of Portugal pays tribute to Salgueiro Maia
German Tivani won the second stage with a time of 3 hours and 45 minutes and is wearing the orange jersey, reserved for the leader of the points classification. At the end of the stage, the yellow jersey remains Swiss Colin Stüssi, who leads the overall time classification. Jaume Guardeño secured the white jersey, leading the overall youth classification.
After the arrival of the cyclists and the podium ceremony, a bust of Salgueiro Maia was unveiled on the street named after him in Marvila.
"I hope it awakens in young people the curiosity to get to know Salgueiro Maia and fight for a better world," said Natércia Maia, at a ceremony attended by sports councillor Ângelo Pereira and the president of Marvila Parish Council, José António Videira.
The 2nd stage of the race - symbolically part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of April 25th - evoked the memory of the military column that left Santarém for Lisbon in 1974, led by Salgueiro Maia.
