Cultural space born out of collaboration between the Gulbenkian Foundation and Lisbon City Council
The opening to the public of the Gulbenkian Foundation's new building and garden - designed by Kengo Kuma and Vladimir Djurovic - coincided with the completion of the intervention in Rua Marquês de Fronteira, in a "public space next to the street, which is also a good job by the City Council", said Carlos Moedas, on his visit to the new cultural space.
"Here we are making a city, a green city, but also the city of contemporary art" which makes Lisbon "the center of the world", he stressed, leaving a word of thanks to the Gulbenkian for the new Modern Art Centre, "on a par with what is done in Paris, London and New York".
The work - which began in January this year - as part of the public space intervention strategy, is part of a series of interventions on the Largo de São Sebastião da Pedreira - Praça de Espanha axis, in the section between Dr. Nicolau Bettencourt and Marquês de Sá da Bandeira streets.
The municipal project, coordinated by Lisboa Ocidental SRU, in conjunction with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, created a public access to the Foundation's garden, next to the renovated Modern Art Center.
In addition to a new, lower wall, which serves as a place to stay and rest, the new configuration has also improved circulation and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, expanding the available space.
