Firefighters honored on the 36th anniversary of the Chiado fire
As a tribute, a wreath was laid in memory of those who fought and those who died in 1988, following the fire that destroyed the heart of the city.
"Today we celebrate the bravery, the service to others, the dedication and, why not say it, the love that all of you put at the service of all of us," thanked Joana Oliveira Costa, Lisbon City Council councillor, to all the firefighters present, both professionals and volunteers.
"This day has certainly earned a place in the city's collective memory as one of the worst disasters to hit Lisbon," she added.
The ceremony ended with an on-site exhibition, consisting of a rescue and technical assistance vehicle designed to deal with accidents involving trapped victims and two motorized vehicles for specific operations, assigned to the rapid response teams on motorcycles, whose mission is to patrol, prevent and respond immediately to incidents.
