Gira Network opens station next to the Portuguese Parliament
At the opening of the new station, in the parish of Estrela, Carlos Moedas reaffirmed the municipality's "commitment" to cycling and to soft transportation. "Today, we're almost at 1,600 [Gira bikes], so we're going to reach 2,000 very quickly," said the mayor of Lisbon.
After an audit "in which we found that many of our cycle paths, unfortunately, don't have the level of safety that we need", the mayor says that "with this study, we can now move forward with another 90 km of cycle paths, 20 km of which are totally segregated, that is, totally separated".
By 2025, Lisbon's cycle network will increase "from the current 173 km to a total of 263 km", with the construction of 56 more connecting cycle paths "that will improve connections" in this infrastructure.
Since its creation in 2017, the bicycles in the GIRA network have made "more than 12 million trips, exceeding 40 million km".
