Higher education students will have 624 more beds in Lisbon

The new projects, approved today at a town hall meeting, include the construction of a residence with 370 beds on Avenida do Santo Condestável, and another with 254 beds on Rua Ferreira Dias/Avenida República da Bulgária. The municipal initiative aims to help solve the problem of a lack of affordable housing for displaced students.

"In Lisbon we have 50,000 displaced students, who represent around 40% of the students at our universities. I believe that there is no greater injustice than for a student with the merit to enter higher education not to attend it because they can't afford to come and live in Lisbon," said Carlos Moedas, Mayor of Lisbon.

"The municipality is committed to actively contributing to solving the problem of the lack of affordable housing for displaced students," he added, stressing that this effort must be shared by various sectors, including the local administration.

The 624 new beds in Marvila are in addition to the 3,539 beds licensed over the last two years in Lisbon, as a result of public and private projects.
