João Almeida in the top-10 in the first time trial of La Vuelta
The first time trial, held between Lisbon and Oeiras, was won by American Brandon McNulty. João Almeida finished in 10th place, followed by Nelson Oliveira in 11th. Rui Costa came 75th.
"Once again Lisbon is at the center of the world's attention, La Vuelta is being broadcast to 190 countries and followed by more than 1,000 journalists from 250 media outlets," said Carlos Moedas, mayor of Lisbon.
This edition of La Vuelta includes three stages on Portuguese territory. The first stage, a 12-kilometer time trial, started at the Jerónimos Monastery and ended at Praia da Torre, in Oeiras. The competition continues on Sunday with a stage between Cascais and Ourém, and on Monday with a stage between Lousã and Castelo Branco.
The La Vuelta Juvenil was the other highlight of the day, with young athletes competing on a 25.44-kilometer course.
In parallel, there was also the "Pedala Portugal - Bike Tour Lisboa - Oeiras" event, an initiative that promotes urban mobility as a healthy lifestyle and mode of urban transportation, in a 12 km ride for the whole family. Nearly 3,000 participants pedaled between Praça do Império in Lisbon and Praia da Torre in Oeiras, in an event where inclusion, safety and sustainability were all present.
