La Vuelta is back in Lisbon

The 79th edition of the "Vuelta a España", one of the most prestigious cycling events in the world, will start in Portugal for the second time in the competition's history. After the first start in 1997, which promoted Expo 98, the race will once again start on Portuguese soil, with a 12 km individual time trial between Praça do Império, in Lisbon, and Praia da Torre, in Oeiras, on August 17. This inaugural stage will determine the first red jersey for the 2024 edition.

Over 21 days, the cyclists will tackle a total course of 3304 km, which will include high and medium mountain stages, as well as hilly stages and another individual time trial.

The official presentation of the teams took place on August 15, in front of the Belém Tower, and was attended by 176 cyclists divided into 22 teams. The event, which included live music, various activities and raffles, also paid tribute to the Portuguese Army's Cyclist Units, with a display of bikes from the First World War.

Among the cyclists present at this edition were the Portuguese Rui Costa, Nélson Oliveira and João Almeida. Rui Costa, who won a stage in the previous edition of La Vuelta, expressed his satisfaction at competing in Portugal: "It's a great pleasure for me, a pride, a feeling of happiness to be here with this departure from Portugal, together with all the Portuguese who have been impeccable throughout my career."

Nélson Oliveira, an Olympic participant in Paris 2024, will be racing for the Movistar team, while João Almeida, who competed in the last Tour de France, expects great support from the Portuguese public: "It's going to be a thrill, incredible support."

In addition to the main competition, Lisbon is also hosting the Pedala Portugal Bike Tour 2024, a parallel event that will bring together thousands of cyclists on a 12 km ride between Belém and Oeiras, marking the start of La Vuelta.

On August 15 and 16, the Expo Bike Tour will take place next to the Belém Cultural Center, offering a diverse program for cycling enthusiasts.

Ângelo Pereira, the City Council's sports councillor, present at the gala to present the teams, highlighted the importance of the event being held in Lisbon, "an open, cheerful city, a European capital that likes big events and, above all, that loves sport."
