Lisbon will host the selection of the world's best sommelier
The Lisbon edition will take place between October 11 and 17, with the participation of 72 contestants, each representing a country. The official tastings will take place at the Sheraton Lisboa hotel, with daily sessions for around 300 participants, while the final is scheduled for the Coliseu de Lisboa, with around 2,000 people expected to attend.
The program includes visits to vineyards in the Lisbon region and gastronomic experiences in places such as the Marquês de Pombal Palace and the Carlos Lopes Pavilion. Portugal will have a representative chosen through the 20th National Sommelier Competition, organized by the Association of Sommeliers of Portugal.
The Lisbon edition - with more than 3,500 professionals from the sector - will be a unique moment in the international promotion of the city and the country as a gastronomic and wine destination. Part of the ticket sales will go to a charity, according to the organizers.
What does a sommelier do?
The main function of a sommelier is to "advise clients on choosing the ideal wine". They are usually distinguished by a different colored suit from the rest of the restaurant staff, wearing a badge with the title of sommelier or a golden bunch of grapes.
