Paralympic and Deaflympic athletes honored on Inclusive Sports Day

Cristina Gonçalves, gold medalist in boccia, and Miguel Vieira, 7th place in paralympic judo, were honored today in Lisbon. The initiative, at the Casal Vistoso Pavilion, was part of the celebrations for Inclusive Sports Day, organized by Lisbon City Council.

The aim of the meeting was to "highlight the importance of inclusion in sport" and to pay tribute to the athletes who represented Portugal this year at the Paris Paralympic Games and in the Deaflympic Project.

At the event, tribute was paid to Paralympic and Deaflympic athletes from Lisbon clubs, including Cristina Gonçalves and Miguel Vieira, and Prisms of Recognition were handed out to representatives of various Lisbon clubs.

Ângelo Pereira, Lisbon City Council's sports councillor, stressed the importance of the honorees to the sports community. "You are an example and never doubt it. You represent what many people want to be: great athletes," he said, stressing the fundamental role of clubs and associations in promoting inclusive sport.

During the morning, various adapted sports were tried out, such as athletics, boccia, cycling, dance, wheelchair soccer, goalball, judo, polybat and rowing, in collaboration with specialized associations and clubs. A dance dynamic, promoted by the Portuguese Gymnasium Club, closed the event.

The European Week of Sport runs until September 29, with initiatives to promote physical activity for all.
