Solidarity race raises 126,000 euros against breast cancer

The 20th edition of the Sempre Mulher Race brought together around 12,000 participants in Lisbon's Parque das Nações this Sunday, October 19. The event, promoted by the Portuguese Association for the Support of Women with Breast Cancer, aimed to raise awareness of early detection of breast cancer and to raise funds to support women affected by the disease.

With the motto "One for all", the initiative included a competitive race exclusively for women and a walk open to everyone. The winner of the race was Joana Ogura, who completed the 5 km course with the best time. In total, 126,265 euros were raised, which will go entirely to the organizing association. The event was supported by Lisbon City Council (CML) and transformed Parque das Nações into a pink scene of solidarity and hope.

The CML's sports councillor, Rui Cordeiro, highlighted the importance of prevention and announced the municipality's protocol with the Champalimaud Foundation. "Women living in Lisbon up to the age of 50 will be able to have a free mammogram every year. Lisbon City Council is with you in this battle for health," he said.

Tony Carreira, the event's ambassador, stressed how proud he was to be taking part again. "I've been here to support this cause for 17 or 18 years now. It's a source of great pride and I thank everyone who continues to take part in this walk," he said before performing at the start of the race.

Since its first edition in 2006, the Sempre Mulher Race has aimed to "raise awareness of the early detection of breast and gynecological cancer" and to raise funds for "projects to support patients with breast and gynecological pathologies".
