Talent and Innovation were the themes of the UCCI General Assembly

Lisbon was one of the 20 cities present at the XXI General Assembly of the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities (UCCI) on November 5 and 6 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Under the slogan "Ibero-American cities: talent that transforms, innovation that drives", the meeting focused on a common goal: "building more sustainable, humane and innovative cities".

The meeting, chaired by the mayors of Buenos Aires and Madrid, served to "outline the new roadmap for this international body", along with the renewal of the governance structure.

Carlos Moedas, mayor of Lisbon, was elected vice-president in November 2023 for the biennium that is now coming to an end. As part of the renewal of the Executive Committee, the co-presidency will now be held by Buenos Aires and Madrid.

In the coming years, according to its Strategic Planning 2025-2027, UCCI will seek to "strengthen the role of Ibero-American cities as engines of development", with "a focus on people, sustainability and digital modernization, promoting real cooperation between capitals that share history, language and values", said the organization's secretary general, Almudena Maíllo.

Founded in 1982 in Madrid, UCCI includes 29 cities from 24 countries, representing more than 76 million inhabitants. It brings together capital cities of Ibero-America (Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries) with the mission of "strengthening local management, boosting sustainability and improving the quality of life of citizens through horizontal alliances and the exchange of good practices".
