Town hall guarantees support for families and opens investigation

The Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, took part in the Council of Ministers and said today that "this is another day of mourning for Lisbon" and announced the opening of investigations into the Glória elevator accident, guaranteeing that "the city needs answers".


Carlos Moedas declared three days of municipal mourning and ordered an immediate inspection of all the city's funiculars, which will only start working again once they have been completed. "The priority is to accompany the families and the injured in hospitals," he said, assuring the victims and their families of his support.

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, highlighted the readiness of the rescue teams. "The fire department, INEM and the police arrived at the scene of the accident in a matter of minutes, and this rapid response saved lives and prevented the tragedy from taking on even greater proportions," he said.

Luís Montenegro stressed national and international solidarity, announcing that the Attorney General's Office has opened an inquiry and that the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Accidents involving Aircraft and Railways is involved in the investigation.
