Stigma and Discrimination

The reality of HIV infection has changed. Treatments and prevention have evolved, but stigma and discrimination remain. It is time to change the story of HIV in Lisbon.

The stigma associated with HIV is mainly caused by ignorance about the infection, fear of transmission, and stereotypes and prejudices, which lead to discriminatory attitudes.

According to data from the 2021/22 Stigma Index:

  • 38% of people living with HIV have experienced social discrimination;
  • 33% of people living with HIV have postponed or avoided treatment due to stigma and discrimination;
  • 22% of people living with HIV have felt discriminated against by health professionals in the last 12 months;
  • 12% of people living with HIV have avoided or postponed testing for fear of other people's reactions;
  • For 72% of people living with HIV, sharing this fact with people close to them was a positive experience.
