Intervention focused on strengthening safety and improving urban mobility

Intervention phases

The renovation of the João XXI Avenue Tunnel will be carried out in phases to minimize disruption to daily life and ensure everyone’s safety.

General Schedule

Start of work: April 13, 2026

Total closure of the tunnel: April 14, 2026 - for 10 months

Total estimated duration: 720 days (about 24 months)

Deadlines per phase:

Phase 1: 10 months (tunnel closed)
Phase 2: 14 months (surface works, tunnel reopened to traffic)

1.1st Phase - Works inside the tunnel

Total closure of the tunnel for 10 months, with circulation assured on the surface

Structural reinforcement
Fireproofing
Rehabilitation of all infrastructure
- HVAC, fire mains, pumping well, street lighting, generator set room and transformer substation (PT)

2.1st Phase - Surface works

Reopening the tunnel

Refurbishment of the (existing) emergency exit at Avenida de Roma - South Exit
Creation of a new emergency exit at the intersection of Avenida João XXI and Avenida de Roma - North Exit

Throughout the construction period, alternative traffic solutions will be implemented, duly signposted, in order to minimize constraints and ensure mobility in the surrounding area.
