Lisboa without AIDS
(copy 1)
Before you start taking PrEP, you need to be tested for HIV to ensure that you are not infected.
People who take PrEP must have their blood tested regularly.
PrEP is indicated for people at increased risk of HIV infection, namely in the following cases:
- Sexual intercourse without a condom in the last 6 months with people who do not know if they are living with HIV;
- Sexual intercourse without a condom in the last 6 months and diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection;
- Use of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in the last 6 months;
- Sexual intercourse under the influence of excessive alcohol or drugs;
- Sexual intercourse without a condom for the purpose of obtaining money, drugs or other goods;
- Injecting drugs and sharing needles or syringes.
Access to PrEP
How to get it
PrEP can be prescribed at a hospital appointment:
- through your GP
- through a community HIV screening center;
- directly by the person themselves.
The cost
In National Health Service (SNS) hospitals, there are no user charges for consultations and complementary diagnostic and therapeutic acts carried out within the scope of PrEP.
Regulatory framework
Clinical Standard no. 1/2024 reinforces the importance of increasing access and promoting equity in access to PrEP.
PrEP consultations in a community setting
In order to increase access and promote greater equity in HIV prevention, PrEP consultations are now also available in community settings, complementing the limited hospital offer in Lisbon.
The community consultations are offered by:
- GAT - Grupo de Ativistas em Tratamentos (GAT Checkpoint LX and GAT Intendente)
booking via online form
- Portuguese League Against AIDS
booking via online form
This expansion of the offer makes it easier to start PrEP and contributes to a more inclusive and accessible response in the city.
